US: Debanking banned and retrospective investigations of banks ordered

US president Donald Trump has signed an executive order prohibiting financial institutions (FIs) from 'debanking' customers for political or ideological reasons. All FIs are being ordered to reinstate clients and potential clients previously denied services due to unlawful debanking. Federal banking regulators are being told to consider issuing fines or consent decrees for past debanking activities. FIs could now be exposed to sanctions for actions that banking regulators previously forced or encouraged them to take.
